In terms of environmental policy, it is vital that the fine particulate matter (soot) created by diesel engines is removed from the exhaust gas. The modular CRT^® system has proved to be the most effective "weapon" with which to achieve this. More than 20,000 buses in Europe have now been fitted with CRT^® systems. They reduce both the mass of particulate matter and the proportion of fine particles. In the CRT ^® system, soot is trapped and continuously burnt off.

CRT^® combine the effect of a particulate filter with that of an oxidation catalytic converter. The nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) that is formed in the catalytic converter makes it possible for the soot deposits in the trap to be continuously burnt off at a temperature range of 250 to 450 °C.
