Environmental protection, President Rau stressed, remains an ongoing concern and must have a permanent place on the agenda in industry and politics. "For too long people believed that ecology and economics were at odds. But environmental protection does not destroy jobs, it creates them."

Apart from the overall corporate achievement of Hermann J. Schulte, the German Environment Foundation was primarily paying tribute to HJS's development of a particulate filter for diesel engines. The HJS filter has a long operating life and is maintenance free. It has overcome the design-related disadvantages of conventional ceramic filters.

Decisive advantages are offered by the particular material properties of the sintered metal and the modular structure of the filter. If environmentally pollutant emissions are to be reduced, every diesel engine should be fitted with a soot particulate filter as soon as possible. The HJS particulate filter concept, known as the "JET Filter," fulfils all the requirements necessary for use not only in diesel engine cars and commercial vehicles but also in urban buses, local authority vehicles, construction and agricultural machinery. HJS has also developed a retrofit system. Use of an HJS particulate filter guarantees soot-free diesel exhaust gas.

The German Environmental Award for 2003 represents for HJS both a motivation and a commitment to continue developing pioneering technology for diesel exhaust gas. After soot, nitrogen oxides are the other significant component of diesel exhaust to cause environmental pollution. HJS has been working for some time now on technology that will reduce these pollutants and we are confident we will soon be able to present solutions. The pollutant-free diesel engine - the best possible driving force for the future - for HJS too!
