SCR technology for the Blue Badge – so that motorhome owners don’t experience a blue wonder

August 25, 2017

Menden, August 2017 – Some cities are threatening to only allow vehicles with a blue sticker into city centers. Much has not yet been decided, but owners of diesel-powered motorhomes should also think about the future.

  • Nitrogen oxide limits are exceeded in large cities and conurbations.
  • Consequence: Driving bans are imminent!
  • Technically possible: SCR (AdBlue) retrofitting for motorhomes.
  • Retrofit solutions from HJS and KLS, the specialist for special bodies.

For motorhomes with diesel engines up to and including the Euro 5 emissions standard, some cities could become no-go zones as early as next year. If nitrogen oxide limits are exceeded, this could lead to stricter guidelines not only in Stuttgart, but also in conurbations and major cities such as Düsseldorf, Munich, Cologne and Hamburg.

Complex political situation

So will older diesel motorhomes soon no longer be allowed in German city centers? The situation is complicated and politically highly complex. Stuttgart and Munich are threatening that it may only be possible to enter these cities with a diesel vehicle with a blue sticker. The blue sticker is intended to indicate vehicles with low nitrogen oxide emissions. However, this can only be introduced by the Federal Ministry of Transport, which is still skeptical about the blue sticker, at least for the time being.

Right to clean air as a requirement

It is also not yet clear how strict potential diesel driving bans could be. Nevertheless, owners of diesel motorhomes should be aware that discussions about the blue sticker and harmful nitrogen oxides will continue in the future.

Discussion about the blue badge and nitrogen oxides

According to the German Association of Cities, but also the Federal Environment Agency, the blue sticker would be a sensible and easy-to-implement measure to ensure cleaner air. However, if the blue sticker is actually introduced, motorhomes with diesel engines up to and including the Euro 5 emissions standard do not necessarily have to be obsolete.

Solution: Blue upgrade – retrofitting with SCR technology (Adblue)

“There is a technical solution for motorhomes, namely the blue upgrade,” says engine engineer Wolfgang Krause, Managing Director of KLS Reisemobiltechnik from Rheurdt on the Lower Rhine. As an expert in the field of exhaust gas purification, HJS has been offering SCR retrofitting for many years, e.g. for buses in public transport. This technical solution can be adapted to the van/motorhome vehicle class at short notice. “Retrofitting is always cheaper than buying new,” explains Krause. As soon as the relevant legal framework and binding limit values have been established, action could be taken. The blue sticker under discussion could then be the measure of all things.

Individual solutions for motorhomes and special vehicles

HJS and KLS complement each other perfectly when it comes to retrofitting motorhomes and special vehicles: “Due to the individual design of these vehicles, a standard retrofit is generally not possible without further ado,” says Krause. Together, the companies offer a vehicle-specific solution.

Buying new is out of the question for many motorhome enthusiasts

To ensure that diesel motorhomes receive the currently valid green sticker, HJS already supplies the appropriate filter system today, which is then installed in the KLS specialist workshop: “Many of these vehicles are collector’s items or only have a very low speedometer reading. A new purchase is often simply out of the question,” says Philipp Schulte, member of the HJS management team. “That’s why it was particularly important to us to develop suitable modular solutions for these vehicles too.” KLS is the right professional partner for retrofitting. “Two specialists in their fields complement each other perfectly here,” adds Schulte.

Green sticker through retrofitting even for niche types

HJS and KLS also offer suitable solutions for all-wheel drive cars, mobile dealerships and other special vehicles. Particularly convenient: Owners can collect their vehicle after retrofitting, including the green sticker, so that the registration can be taken over directly.

Joint appearance at the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf

HJS Emission Technology (Menden, Sauerland) and KLS Reisemobiltechnik (Rheurdt, Lower Rhine) will be presenting their products and solutions together from August 25 to September 3, 2017 during the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf (Hall A, Stand A93).
