Retrofitting an SCR system from HJS can significantly reduce nitrogen oxide emissions in city traffic. Menden-based company presents technical solutions at the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf.

Retrofitting is cheaper than buying new. And an SCR retrofit from the Menden-based company HJS Emission Technology also makes perfect sense from an environmental point of view. A series of ADAC tests recently scrutinized the effectiveness of the technology and confirmed the reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions.

When a new purchase is out of the question
HJS has been supplying suitable particulate filters for years to ensure that motorhomes receive the currently valid green environmental sticker. “Many of these vehicles are virtually family members or only have a very low speedometer reading. A new purchase is often simply out of the question,” says Philipp Schulte, member of the HJS management team. “That’s why we are particularly keen to develop suitable solutions for these vehicles too.”

HJS performs very well in ADAC test
Back in March of this year, the automobile club confirmed the effectiveness of prototypes of a hardware retrofit for nitrogen oxide reduction on various vehicle models in a test* carried out together with the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport. The Fiat Ducato 130 Multijet 2.3 D retrofitted by HJS significantly reduces nitrogen oxide emissions after the SCR retrofit. With the engine at operating temperature, nitrogen oxides were reduced by 68 percent in urban traffic, while outside urban areas the reduction was as high as 82 percent. Of all four retrofit systems tested, the HJS SCR system required the lowest additional fuel consumption of just one percent (0.07l/100km).

Despite the tested effectiveness, the political framework for a legally accepted retrofit is still lacking. Motorhomes up to and including the Euro 5 emissions standard do not necessarily have to be outdated, as driving bans for older diesel vehicles can be avoided by retrofitting.

HJS Emission Technology will be presenting the solution from August 25 to September 2, 2018 at the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf (Hall 13, Stand A93).
