CMT trade fair in Stuttgart: HJS and KLS present effective SCR retrofitting for motorhomes

January 11, 2019

Retrofitting an SCR system from HJS can significantly reduce nitrogen oxide emissions in urban traffic. The Menden-based company HJS and KLS will be showcasing the technical solution for retrofitting at the CMT in Stuttgart.

Retrofitting is cheaper than buying new. An SCR retrofit from the Menden-based company HJS Emission Technology also makes perfect sense from an environmental point of view. A series of ADAC tests has scrutinized the effectiveness of the technology – and confirmed the reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions. At the CMT trade fair in Stuttgart, the world’s largest public trade fair for tourism and leisure, HJS and KLS, the specialist for special bodies, will be presenting effective retrofit solutions for motorhomes.

When buying a new vehicle is out of the question
“Many motorhomes are practically family members and only have a very low tachometer reading. Buying a new one is often simply out of the question,” explains Philipp Schulte, member of the HJS management team: “That’s why it’s particularly important to us to develop suitable solutions for these vehicles.”

HJS performs very well in ADAC test
Back in March 2018, the German Automobile Club (ADAC) confirmed the effectiveness of prototypes of a hardware retrofit for nitrogen oxide reduction on various vehicle models in a test* carried out together with the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport. The Fiat Ducato 130 Multijet 2.3 D retrofitted by HJS significantly reduces nitrogen oxide emissions after the SCR retrofit. With the engine at operating temperature, nitrogen oxides were reduced by 68 percent in urban traffic, while outside urban areas the reduction was as high as 82 percent. Of all four retrofit systems tested, the HJS SCR system required the lowest additional fuel consumption of just one percent (0.07l/100km).

With the currently published political framework conditions for legally accepted retrofitting, products must now be presented to the Federal Motor Transport Authority for approval as quickly as possible.

Solution: Blue upgrade – retrofitting with SCR technology (AdBlue)
“There is a technical solution for motorhomes, namely the blue upgrade,” explains engine construction engineer Wolfgang Krause, Managing Director of KLS Reisemobiltechnik from Rheurdt on the Lower Rhine. As an expert in the field of exhaust gas purification, HJS has been offering SCR retrofitting for many years, e.g. for public transport buses. This technical solution can be adapted to the van/motorhome vehicle class at short notice. “Retrofitting is always cheaper than buying new,” explains Krause from KLS.

HJS and KLS complement each other perfectly when it comes to retrofitting motorhomes and special vehicles: “Due to the individual design of these vehicles, a standard retrofit is generally not possible without further ado,” says Krause. Together, the companies offer a vehicle-specific solution.

Joint appearance at the CMT trade fair in Stuttgart
HJS Emission Technology (Menden, Sauerland) and KLS Reisemobiltechnik (Rheurdt, Niederrhein) will be presenting their products and solutions together from January 12 to January 20, 2019 during the CMT trade fair in Stuttgart (hall 9, stand number F 24). Over 2,000 exhibitors will be presenting their products and services at the world’s largest public trade fair for tourism and leisure with over 240,000 visitors. Around 850 caravans, motorhomes and leisure vehicles will be on display.
