A sigh of relief for motorhome owners

May 4, 2021

HJS offers a general operating permit (ABE) for hardware retrofitting with SCR system and secures the vacation season for motorhome owners even when driving is prohibited in low emission zones.

For motorhome owners, freedom comes first. The freedom to get to know new places and people. A feeling that has acquired a pale aftertaste for many since the discussion about diesel driving bans. April is the perfect time to get the motorhomes out of hibernation, pick out places for city trips and plan routes through picturesque landscapes with short stops in towns for shopping, especially with a view to summer. Nobody wants to think about driving bans.

In 2018, the ADAC tested the first selective catalytic reduction systems (SCR systems) in Euro 5 diesels from several manufacturers. The SCR system from HJS Emission Technology GmbH & Co KG for vans already stood out at the time. The right signal for the company to further develop its system for other, different vehicle types on this basis.

HJS retrofit system now available
HJS is the first company on the German market to receive a general type approval (ABE) from the Federal Motor Transport Authority for “nitrogen oxide (NOx) reduction systems with increased reduction performance for retrofitting to light tradesmen’s and delivery vehicles”. Now the legislator has extended the conditions for the approval of retrofitting to include privately used vehicles. With immediate effect, HJS also offers an SCR system for motorhomes that enables Euro 5 vehicles to achieve an emission level of Euro 6 and are therefore exempt from driving bans for Euro 5 vehicles. “We have worked hard to be able to offer our customers a solution that doesn’t just focus on concerns about driving bans. Many owners of motorhomes have also been concerned that their vehicles would suffer a loss in value compared to newer vehicles. A concern that we can now dispel,” says the company.

The hardware retrofit is available immediately for the VW Crafter, VW T5 (also all-wheel drive), MB Sprinter and Vito as well as Ford Transit and Iveco Daily models. Other vehicle types, such as the Fiat Ducato, are being prepared in order to further expand the delivery program in the short term. The systems are installed quickly and easily by the HJS competence and installation partners, including registration of the retrofit system in the vehicle documents. Efficient exhaust gas purification – even at low temperatures and in part-load operation
HJS has developed active thermal management for this purpose, which guarantees that the SCR catalytic converter always works with the best possible NOx reduction. With the help of proven SCR technology, the innovative HJS hardware converts nitrogen oxides into harmless nitrogen and water vapor with the addition of the additive AdBlue®. In order to offer the best possible guarantee, the robust HJS system and the control unit developed by HJS for use in commercial vehicles were subjected to extensive test drives and test bench trials.
