Retrofitting buses with SCRT® technology: an active measure to avoid driving bans.

April 11, 2018

Menden, April 2018 – Following the ruling of the Federal Administrative Court, cities are allowed to independently impose driving bans to improve air quality. However, this is only a last resort for most local authorities and should be avoided as far as possible by other measures: Retrofitting public transport buses with original HJS SCRT® technology is an effective option that is also subsidized by the federal government.

  • Driving bans are a legally permissible means
  • Alternative measures to avoid driving bans
  • Retrofit solutions for urban bus fleets are available at short notice
  • HJS systems remove harmful nitrogen oxides from diesel exhaust gases
  • Funding of up to 60% from the federal government

Retrofitting buses makes both ecological and economic sense for local authorities. With a retrofitted SCRT® system from HJS, harmful nitrogen oxides (NOX) can be almost completely removed from diesel exhaust gases. For the cost of a modern Euro VI diesel bus, up to 15 Euro V/ EEV buses can be brought to a comparably good emission level.

Bus retrofitting as an important measure measure promoted by the federal government

The federal government is not leaving the municipalities alone with the task and is providing a three-digit million sum as funding as part of the “Immediate action program for clean air 2017-2020”. Local authorities and transport companies can thus make an immediate contribution to avoiding driving bans. However, the technical requirements of the corresponding funding guideline, adopted on 28.03.2018, are demanding against the background of the goal of “sustainable air improvement”:

Exhaust emission limits at Euro VI level and subsequent measurements by the Federal Motor Transport Authority require the best possible effectiveness in all operating conditions over a period of at least 4 years and 200,000 km. It is therefore necessary to use SCRT® technology that is adapted to the vehicle in the best possible way.System SCRT® for Citaro buses System SCRT® for MAN buses

Original SCRT® from HJS: Competence and experience for city traffic

HJS has long been a partner of the most important bus manufacturers. The SCRT® systems developed by HJS, designed to meet the retrofit criteria of the BMVI, are based on the know-how gained from cooperation with the vehicle manufacturers. This makes it possible to optimize the technical and economic framework conditions and guarantee the sustainable function of the systems.

For example, HJS uses active thermal management via two networked actuators to ensure that the systems offer the best possible reduction performance under all ambient conditions, even at low load, in stop & go mode and at the bus stop – without influencing the engine.

Confirmed by neutral expert opinions

In real operation on the bus route, the HJS technology proves to be highly efficient and reliable. With this technology, even older vehicles can be brought up to the exhaust emission level of Euro VI buses. In a recently published report commissioned by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport, the ADAC confirmed: “The effect of an SCRT® retrofit on a city bus was also examined as part of the project. The result is impressive: the NOX emissions of EURO V city buses can be reduced by over 95% with SCR retrofitting.”

Established partner with comprehensive service

HJS offers comprehensive service beyond the delivery of the systems – all in the interests of sustainable, clean mobility. This includes flexible installation concepts, training courses and a comprehensive service network right through to on-site customer service. In addition, the HJS fleet monitoring system allows the proper functionality of the system to be displayed and checked at any time.

Use for original equipment and retrofitting

The SCRT® technology patented by HJS is now used by all vehicle manufacturers worldwide to comply with the strictest diesel emission standards. In Europe, HJS has retrofitted over 30,000 buses to date, 5,000 of which have already been fitted with SCR or SCRT® technology.

About HJS:

As a medium-sized company based in Menden/Sauerland, HJS Emission Technology GmbH & Co. KG, founded in 1976, stands for many years of experience and expertise in the field of exhaust gas aftertreatment. Around 400 employees develop, manufacture and market modular systems for reducing pollutant emissions. The innovative environmental protection technologies are used both as original equipment and for retrofitting in passenger cars, light to heavy commercial vehicles and in mobile and stationary applications in the non-road sector. In addition to systems for petrol engines, HJS today primarily offers solutions for diesel engines – especially for the reduction of soot particles and nitrogen oxides. With extensive patent rights for DPF® (Diesel Particulate Filter) and SCRT® (Selective Catalytic Reduction Technology), HJS sets national and global standards.
