Commercial apprenticeships

To learn the theoretical part of the training, the industrial clerks attend the Märkischer Kreis vocational college in Iserlohn. There, the subjects subject to examination, such as business processes, management and control and business and social processes, are taught in three large school blocks

The intermediate examination then takes place approximately 1 ½ years later. In this examination, the theoretical part from the block lessons and the practical part are tested. After the intermediate examination, HJS then offers the option of shortening the training to 2 ½ years.

The active support of trainees is also needed at trade fairs. They are needed at trade fairs such as the training fairs.

The focus for all trainees is on “Business English” and explaining HJS products. Of course, we also support each other so that even the biggest “English grouches” can express themselves in English.

Have I aroused your interest in an apprenticeship at HJS?

Great! Then apply for an apprenticeship as an industrial clerk at HJS!

I started my apprenticeship as an office management assistant in summer 2016 and am now in my second year of training. During my 3-year apprenticeship, I work in various departments at HJS, such as Sales, Purchasing, Human Resources and Incoming Goods. This variety means it never gets boring.

Before beginning their training as an office management assistant, each trainee must select two of ten elective qualifications. The elective qualifications are: order management and coordination, commercial management and control, commercial processes in SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises), purchasing and logistics, human resources management, marketing and sales, assistance and secretarial services, public relations and event management, administration and law

and public finance. The elective qualifications are taught by the company and are part of the final oral examination.

I opted for the elective qualification in Human Resources Management and Purchasing and Logistics.

During the first three weeks of my apprenticeship, I was assigned to the incoming goods department. The first thing I learned there was to check the quality and quantity of the goods delivered. I also processed returns and differentiated between complaints and credit notes.

My next department was Industrial Aftermarket Sales. There I processed customer orders with our merchandise management system and got to know the various HJS products.

When I was in the Purchasing department, I entered the order confirmations from suppliers into our merchandise management system. But I also sent out inquiries and orders independently.

In the Human Resources department, I learned how to enter leave certificates and sickness certificates in the time program. I also helped with the preparation of payroll accounting. To do this, we first had to check our employees’ time sheets to make sure no time was missing. The payroll was then created using a payroll program.

I’m currently working in DAT Sales, where I enter orders into the merchandise management system and send out order confirmations. I also have to create customs documents for orders abroad and sometimes even still use an old typewriter.

In addition to working at the company, I attend the Märkischer Kreis vocational college in Iserlohn twice a week. There I am taught business processes, office processes, German, politics, English and management and control.

During the training, we also have English lessons once a week, where we brush up on our English together and learn to explain HJS products and processes in English.

Through the factory lessons, which take place every two weeks, we get to know other departments that have less to do with our apprenticeship, but which can help us to understand more complex areas.

Furthermore, all trainees independently organize the production of our trainee newspaper “Trainee Times”. For example, we write reports about English lessons or trade fairs that we have attended.

To get to know the new trainees and promote team spirit, we organize a trainee outing every summer. This year we went to a laser tag game in Bergkamen and then had a bite to eat at Gasthof Hünnies in Lendringsen.

Management assistant for office management!

I started my apprenticeship as a warehouse logistics specialist in 2016.

I changed companies in September 2017 and am now continuing my training at HJS.

Training as a warehouse logistics specialist is a 3-year apprenticeship.

Vocational school lessons take place twice a week at Kaufmannsschule 1 in Hagen. The vocational school imparts theoretical knowledge. This can then be applied practically in the company. I’m currently studying warehouse logistics processes, goods handling, economics and business studies, religion, politics and data processing. In the first year of the apprenticeship, you also have sports lessons and English. The intermediate examination takes place after about 1 1/2 years.

If you perform well or have suitable previous training, you also have the option of shortening your training by six months. During the apprenticeship, you will work in the incoming goods, dispatch and order picking departments.

Training begins in the goods receiving department. In the goods receiving department, you learn what to look out for when accepting goods, checking them and storing them properly. This also includes unloading goods from trucks using a forklift. We process large consignments as a team. The goods are then booked into the IT system. Parcels must also be checked and taken to the departments, complaints and credit notes recorded and the exchange of load carriers must be prepared.

In order picking, the goods are picked for customer orders or internal work. This is done using a pick list on which the article number and compartment number are noted.

In shipping, you learn how to pack the goods properly so that they are not damaged during transportation.

Once a week, there are English lessons together with the other HJS trainees so that they can communicate better with a freight forwarder, for example.

There are also factory lessons every two weeks. Each department manager introduces us to their department and explains what work is carried out in that department and what the process is like. This gives us an insight into the whole company and enables us to better understand the interrelationships.

Every three months, we trainees write a report, e.g. about the area in which we work, about English lessons or experiences during our training. These reports are published in the “Trainee Times”, our trainee newspaper.

Training at HJS is fun, varied and diverse.

Your apprenticeship lasts three years and starts in August. During the apprenticeship, you will get to know the commercial departments in order to gain an impression of the working methods and tasks of your colleagues. This helps you to understand the working methods and requirements of the specialist departments in order to help them with the digital transformation. We put the theoretical content acquired at vocational school into practice together to enable the direct application of what has been learned at school and to consolidate the learning objectives.

As a prospective IT specialist in system integration, you will be in contact with all areas of the company and help all departments to take the next step towards digitalization. You will keep up to date in all areas of IT, follow new developments and implement them in our environment where it makes sense to do so. If problems arise, you will persistently search for the causes and ensure that IT is running smoothly again. IT security is one of our core topics – you are on board when it comes to protecting HJS from IT risks.

Additional factory and English lessons are offered in order to provide the trainees with a constant stream of new knowledge and prepare them for their future careers.

One thing is certain: boredom is not on the timetable when training to become an IT specialist – system integration! So if you have a keen interest in working with IT systems, nothing should stand in the way of your decision.

Technical apprenticeships

Even before the start of training, HJS offers new trainees the opportunity to get to know each other as well as the majority of the trainers and employees at a meeting. In June 2016, it was at the 40th anniversary celebration of HJS that brought us closer together.

Training to become a technical product designer takes 3.5 years, but can be shortened to 2.5 or 3 years. The intermediate examination takes place after 1.5 years and counts for 30% of the overall grade.

My training as a technical product designer started on August 1, 2016.
However, I didn’t spend the first few months in the design department, my actual department, but in the company, so I was able to get to know my colleagues and the products I would be working with later.
The first department I got to know was maintenance, which gave me an overview of the entire company, the machines used and the products for six weeks.

I then spent five weeks in equipment construction, where I came into my first contact with technical drawings, which will later form a major part of my job. I was able to learn how tools are constructed and what the corresponding drawings look like.

In prototyping, my last department for the time being before construction, I then had even more to do with the actual drawings and had to build a prototype independently, identify possible errors or improvements and got to know the first employees in construction.

I have already taken on some tasks, so I was directly involved in the workflow. However, I’ve never been overwhelmed and I always have someone to talk to if I run into problems.
My work mainly involves creating 3D models and the corresponding 2D drawings, including dimensions, but I’m also learning other things, such as creating article numbers and parts lists.

I was also taught how to use a 3D scanner, a device that can be used to scan catalytic converters, for example, so that they don’t have to be laboriously measured and redesigned.

I attended a pneumatics course in the first year of my apprenticeship and there are a few more courses to come. In this sense, it is an important aspect that HJS gives trainees the chance to learn something outside the company during their training.

At the Hönne Berufskolleg in Menden, I have, among other things, so-called learning fields; e.g. technical communication, which deals with the creation of drawings, standards, dimensioning and working on the computer.
There is also the learning field of materials science. We learn to make decisions about the right material that is best suited for a product or its manufacture. Another learning area is English, to make international communication easier or even possible in the first place and to have technical terms at hand or in mind at all times.

English is not only taught at school, we trainees also have English lessons once a week at the company. This keeps our English skills fresh in our minds and we learn something new every time.

The work at HJS and the lessons at school complement each other perfectly. At school, I’m given the theoretical foundations for successful work, and at work, theory becomes practice and practice becomes routine.

Have I aroused your interest in this profession and an apprenticeship at HJS?

My apprenticeship as an industrial mechanic specializing in maintenance in the Plant Maintenance department began on August 1, 2017. The apprenticeship normally lasts 3½ years, but can be shortened by ½ to 1 year. The main focus of the work of an industrial mechanic/maintenance technician is on repairing, optimizing and maintaining the systems and machines required for production.

At the beginning of the apprenticeship, I first learn the basics, such as filing, drilling and sawing. In the 2nd year of training, I will then move on to turning, milling, grinding and sawing machines. In the 3rd year of training I will probably learn welding, which is an important part of the work of an industrial mechanic/maintenance engineer.

At the beginning, I was given a tour of the company by an older apprentice who explained the processes to me. After a few weeks, I was given smaller jobs and projects, such as making and fitting a splinter guard for machines. I needed the basic skills I had learned. An older apprentice is always on hand to help me with larger jobs and the journeymen also help me with more difficult questions.

At the same time, I learn the theoretical knowledge of the profession at the Hönne Berufskolleg in Menden. I attend these once or twice a week throughout my apprenticeship. But I also learn a lot at training courses for the individual subjects at the vocational college, such as pneumatics, hydraulics or, later on, exam preparation.

There are many opportunities for further training in my profession, e.g. the technician qualification, which allows you to expand your field of application from the pure assembly of machines to development and preparation. The technician also opens the door to a specialist degree. There are also many other special opportunities for further technical training.

The Technical Business Administrator and, building on this, the Technical Business Administrator are qualifications that include commercial planning and can enable promotion to management positions.

In addition, HJS offers all trainees a weekly English course in which they learn all the basics of the English language. Furthermore, HJS offers participation in factory lessons, where individual departments in the company are presented.

On 01.08.2017 I started my 3 ½ year apprenticeship as an industrial mechanic in the field of mechanical and plant engineering.

First of all, you are taught how to use a file in toolmaking. After you have filed all kinds of different workpieces straight, square and to the right size, you will move on to fixture construction, where the industrial mechanic will also work in the future. In fixture construction, you will be taught the basics of operating lathes, milling machines and drills under supervision. The aim is to be able to make jigs and fixtures independently using technical drawings. Some of the materials used are structural steel, brass and aluminum.

The school-based part of the apprenticeship takes place 1-2 times a week at the Hönne Berufskolleg in Menden. The subjects you will deal with most during your training are production processes, assembly processes, maintenance processes and economics.

I am particularly well prepared for my intermediate examination, which will take place in spring 2019, and my final examination, which will take place in winter 2020, as a 3-week stay at the SIHK in Hemer serves as a practical examination preparation for the machines. The theoretical preparation will be completed at the vocational school.

Training as an industrial mechanic is a recognized training occupation and can be shortened from 3 ½ to 3 years.

In addition to hydraulics and pneumatics courses, HJS offers all trainees a weekly English course in which they learn all the basics of the English language. In addition, HJS offers participation in factory lessons, where individual departments in the company are presented. There are also events outside of work, such as a Christmas party or an annual trainee meeting, to help all new trainees get to know each other and to ease their initial excitement. There are also lots of trainee projects, such as the ergonomics project or the energy project.

The training is a lot of fun and because it is so varied, you never get bored.

In August 2016 and 2017, we started our two-year apprenticeship as machine and plant operators at HJS. During our training, we get to know many different departments and areas of the company, such as the IDEAL plant, tube bending technology, work preparation, toolmaking and many more. To further strengthen our knowledge of the various departments, we are also assigned to the quality assurance department.

Our tasks during the apprenticeship are very varied. The core activities consist of setting up and retooling machines and systems, as well as monitoring production processes, including minor maintenance work. We also plan and prepare work processes, learn industry-specific production techniques and take care of smaller quality assurance activities, e.g. worker self-inspection. The practical and theoretical intermediate examinations take place in the fall. The practical intermediate examination takes place in the training workshop in Hemer and the theoretical intermediate examination takes place at the Hönne vocational college in Menden, where vocational school lessons also take place once a week. The apprenticeship can be shortened by up to one year.

So far, we have also attended many additional training courses during our apprenticeship, including a pneumatics course, a safety course and training as first aiders at the ASB in Menden.

In addition, we have English lessons on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the company and internal company lessons every two weeks to further develop our skills. Twice a year, we trainees produce the “Trainee Times”, a trainee magazine for the summer and winter, in which, for example, profiles of the trainees or trainee projects are presented to colleagues. Before the start of training, a joint trainee meeting is held with all former and future trainees and their trainers so that everyone can get to know each other before training begins. At the end of the year, a Christmas party is held at our HJS company every year. Last year, we planned an ergonomic project for trainee projects and presented it to our employees.

If you want to train as a machine and plant operator, you should be interested in machines and processes, have a technical understanding and demonstrate manual dexterity.

On the whole, the training is very varied and the working atmosphere is very pleasant.

In August 2017, we, Joni Osman and Sascha Busch, started our vocational training at HJS Emission Technology GmbH & Co. We applied for an apprenticeship as a tool mechanic with a technical college entrance qualification. There are various specializations in training to become a tool mechanic: Gauge construction, mold technology, fixture construction and punching and forming technology.

We opted for the field of stamping and forming technology. The specializations only differ in minor sub-areas. The length of the apprenticeship is 3 ½ years and can be shortened to 3 years.

At the beginning of the apprenticeship, we were taught the basics of metalworking. During the training, we learned about machining processes and various joining methods. Our first task was to file a steel block with a fit. We used a square and a caliper gauge to check whether the workpiece was square and to size.

The first machine we were allowed to use and get to know was the band saw. Both straight and curved cuts are possible with a band saw. With special auxiliary devices, circular cuts can also be produced. In the near future, we will also be learning how to use the drill, grinder, milling machine and lathe.

During the apprenticeship, we go to vocational school at the Hönne vocational college once or twice a week. We primarily learn how to correctly dimension drawings and calculate angle functions. The intermediate exams will take place in spring 2019 and winter 2020.

HJS is a very informal company and offers all trainees the opportunity to take part in company English lessons. In addition, the company organizes a summer party and a Christmas party on the company premises every year.

In addition, a trainee meeting is held for all trainees, all future trainees and all trainers shortly before the start of training to give everyone the opportunity to get to know each other a little in advance.

In August, I started my apprenticeship as an electronics technician specializing in industrial engineering at HJS. Of course, there are also other specializations in the field of electrical engineering, but these only differ in small areas. My apprenticeship lasts 3 ½ years.

At the beginning, I was able to look at all the repairs with my trainer so that I could get to know the individual processes. After the introductory period, my main tasks included testing and repairing welding equipment. I also carried out smaller tasks, such as changing an initiator (used to check the position of workpieces) or reconditioning a foot switch. The five most important safety rules that I learned at the beginning of my training are particularly important for these processes:

  1. Unlock
  2. Secure against reconnection
  3. Determine absence of voltage
  4. Earthing and short-circuiting
  5. Cover and isolate neighboring live parts

I have now reached my 2nd year of training. In addition to the activities just described, I also learned how to program systems and machines. I also receive larger orders, such as making changes to individual machines. This includes, for example, reprogramming the machine sequences.

In addition to the days at the company, where I learn my practical skills, I go to the Hönne vocational college in Menden once or twice a week, where I improve my theoretical knowledge. There are two subjects, “Installing and operating automated systems” and “Installing and operating power distribution and building systems”, which are offered specifically for the electronics technician for industrial engineering specialization. In addition to these subjects, students are taught German, English, economics and politics.

In addition to the varied training, there are other great opportunities for us trainees. For example, we work with all HJS trainees four times a year to design the trainee newspaper “Trainee Times”, which contains interviews with HJS employees, puzzles, horoscopes, recipes, profiles, reports and much more. We also take part in English lessons once a week together with the commercial trainees. Our teacher places a lot of emphasis on communication and pronunciation and we also cover work-related topics.

Of course, being an electronics technician for industrial engineering is not the easiest profession. But thanks to the latest technology and the tasks involved, you really enjoy your work. I am very happy to be able to learn this apprenticeship because I really enjoy it!

If you also want to become an electronics technician for industrial engineering, then apply to us!
